Deciding to Pay for a CPA Exam Regrade
(SmartPros)
The most common question posed when exam scores are released is: "Should I pay the $65 fee to have the exam regraded?" You see, the AICPA does offer a regrade option.
[Editor's Note: this article is in reference to the old paper-based exam, not the computer-based exam that is now in use.]
For a fee of $65 each for Auditing, Law, and FARE, and $45 each for ARE, a candidate can request a regrade. Here are a few points about regrades.
- The AICPA does take the process seriously. An independent, experienced, grader performs the function. First, they manually verify the accuracy of the objective answer scores. Next, they independently verify the original scoring of essays and/or problem solutions. The person completing the review is a very experienced, qualified staff member. Finally, the total score is manually verified.
- With either a pass or a fail situation, candidates do not receive any tips, analysis, or comments about their performance. The final report is simply a letter that states "no change" or the newly revised score. Many candidates misunderstand the process and believe that they will receive a report with tips on how to improve their performance.
- The AICPA has adjusted very few grades. For example, in the over 2,000 grade review requests, only one person on the November 1997 and one person on the November 1998 exams received grade notification changes. The problems that resulted in these grade changes have now been corrected and the AICPA is confident that these problems will not occur in the future.
- Given the facts, what should a candidate do? The answer is simple. First, sign-up to take the next CPA exam. You are too close to give-up. Next, if you must, request a regrade. However, realize that the regrade takes up to six weeks. In the mean time, you must begin your studies for the next exam. You can't afford to waste time waiting for a grade change. Knowing that changes are rare, it is best to begin your review as soon as possible.
The chances of receiving a grade change from a failing grade to a passing grade are just about equal to your chances of winning the lottery. So don't count on a grade change. Begin your studies and pass the next CPA exam.
